Abused Kids

Psalm 109:31

Near the close of Pope Francis’  trip to the Philippines when 12-year-old Glyzelle Palomar, a former abused street child rescued by a church foundation, asked these questions, he put away his prepared speech and spoke to her in her native Spanish. Glyzelle cried as she began to speak, “There are many children neglected by their own parents. There are also many who became victims and many terrible things happened to them like drugs or prostitution. Why is God allowing something like this to happen, even to innocent children? And why are there so few who are helping us?” Moved by her tears, Francis responded off the cuff, “Only when we are able to cry are we able to come close to responding to your question. Those on the margins cry. Those who have fallen by the wayside cry. Those who are discarded cry. But those who are living a life that is more or less without need, we don’t know how to cry.”

We need to see these needs and cry and then we need to do more. We need to act. The Psalmist closes his cry for God to curse the abuser of those who are weak and vulnerable with these words, “For He stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.” - Psalm 109:31

And God’s Son had this to say to those who cause harm to His kids. “If anyone causes one of these little ones, those who believe in me, to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned and cast in the depths of the sea.” - Matthew 18:6

Lord, I pray today for the Word of Life team in the Philippines who seek to strengthen the local church in the Philippines through camping, Bible clubs, and through their Bible Institute to raise up mature believers who will be used by your Spirit to not only meet the needs of abused children but also all those who need to hear that Jesus can give us all new life freely by His grace alone.
