Believe in the Catch

Proverbs 3:5-6

I’ve used this reality object lesson for years to illustrate the meaning of “trust.” In the midst of a sermon on biblical trust or faith I would ask for a volunteer from the audience. Children were usually the first to get their hands up. I would have them come up on to the platform. I would then step down and stand on the floor right in front of them. “Turn your back to me and put your heels right here on the edge of the platform. “Now close your eyes, and on the count of three, fall straight back. I promise that I will catch you. I promise I can hold you and you won’t hit the floor.” Then I would count, “One, two….”

With children I would have to be ready long before I got to three. With abandon they would throw themselves back. I can’t count how many times I’ve used this illustration, and only once did I have someone refuse to fall back. He was a middle age adult. I counted to three several times and tried to get him to relax and trust me, but there was no way he was going to do it. Finally, he walked down from the platform back to his seat.

It’s one thing not to trust your pastor. It’s another thing to not be willing to put all your weight on the LORD. In his third one-on-one talk with his son, the wise father presented “trust in the LORD” as one of the foundational responsibilities his son must internalize.

“Trust in the LORD with all your internal being! Don’t lean on your own ability to decide what is right and wrong, wise or foolish. In all your ways be intimate with the LORD, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

LORD, when all those children simply closed their eyes and fell into my arms, it reminded me why Jesus said we need to become like little children to inherit Your Kingdom. As I grow older, help me to keep a childlike trust in You. Whether it’s teaching at Southern Bible this week, or getting fearful about the safety of our extended family as violence increases in our society, help me today to rest in Your guidance and protection. Help me today to trust You and not try and figure everything out on my own.
