God’s Reality, Not Mine

Proverbs 3:19-20

During break in my Tuesday morning Old Testament Intro class, Johnny, my TA, had a group of students clustered around his computer. They were watching an interview with Will Smith. The top-billed actor was expressing his take on Two plus Two. “I want to represent magic, that you’re in a Universe and ….2 + 2 only equals 4 if you accept that 2 + 2 equals 4. 2 + 2’s gonna be what I want it to be… You just decide what it’s gonna be, who you’re gonna be.. just decide and from that point Universe is gonna get out of your way… We are who we choose to be.”

This is an old deception. It’s the trick the Serpent played on Eve when he implied that we could decide for ourselves what reality is going to be and what it is not, and that God is the scrooge who’s trying to keep us from all this wonderful magic. The wise father in Proverbs gave his son the opposite advice about the meaning of life. God, not us humans, is at the center of the universe, and it was His skillful blueprint that guided the creation process in the beginning, and He’s still sustaining the planet, even making sure that the rain and dew don’t cease to fall.

“By wisdom the LORD founded the earth, established the heavens by understanding; by His knowledge the primordial deep split open and the clouds drip dew.” - Proverbs 3:19-20

LORD, many are mesmerized by the hypnotic idea that the universe heeds their potentiality thinking and imaginative dreams. Help them to come to and realize that You are at the controls when it comes to life and our destiny. Help me to be a wise son today who obeys Your wise instructions realizing that in the end You will let me eat from the Tree of Life because of my trust in Your Son.

When it was time to resume class, Johnny looked up from the computer and with a twinkle in his eye said, “Dr. Dave, I’m going to hire Will Smith to play the lead in an incredible idea I have for a hit movie. I’ll promise him the twenty million he now receives per movie, but will write the check for twenty cents. When he calls his lawyer, my defense will be, “In my universe twenty million dollars equals twenty cents.”
