The Seventy Sevens
Whether it’s a conversation with my wife or listening to the latest newscast, if we desire to even have a chance at understanding one another, we must stop, lay aside our own point of view long enough so that we can understand what someone else is trying to get across to us. This is true in conversations, and newscasts, but it is also true when it comes to reading the Bible.
The next four verses in Daniel are the most difficult to interpret in the entire book, and we must not allow our own personal theology to block us from reading what Daniel actually says in his text, track his thought from one line to the next, and then try to connect the dots to begin to understand the prophecy the angel, Gabriel, declared to him.
So we need to begin by carefully reading Daniel 9:24:
“Seventy sevens are determined upon your people and upon your holy city to end the transgression, to seal the sin offering, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in righteousness forever, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Holy of Holies.”
Now here are some questions to help us listen carefully to what Gabriel just said to Daniel”:
2. In the book, who are Daniel’s people and his holy city?
3. According to what Daniel has written so far what would his text mean by phrases like: End transgression, Seal up sin, Atone for iniquity, Bring in eternal righteousness, Seal up prophecy and vision, and Anoint the Holy of Holies?
Work on this puzzle going back over what you have learned so far in the book. Take a stab at the six things Gabriel says will be fulfilled in the time period of “Seventy sevens.”
I'll share what I come up with in tomorrow’s Devo.
LORD, Gabriel challenged Daniel to understand this prophecy. Help us to open up to your point of view and your thoughts revealed so far in the Book of Daniel so that we can begin to understand this strategic prophecy.
