What does the living God do about political rulers who exalt their own self-image and start to push a personality cult?
Nebuchadnezzar’s seven years of insanity reveals what God did in the 6thcentury BC when the king of the Babylonian Empire became totally full of himself. But Daniel also reveals that a ruler’s eyes can be redirected.
“At the end of the days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes to heaven and my understanding returned to me. Then I praised the Most High; I praised and glorified the One who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion and his kingdom endures from generation to generation. And all those living on earth—they are counted as nothing. Whatever he desires he does with the powers of the heavens and with those dwelling on earth. None can strike against his hand and say to him, ‘What have you done?’
Right at the moment I looked to the heaven, my understanding returned to me and the honor of my kingship, my majesty, and my splendor were restored to me. My royal counselors and lords sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven because all that he does is true and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.” Daniel 4:34-37
Daniel didn’t want us to miss God’s point. Those who walk arrogantly might succeed for a time, but it leads to beastly madness. But there’s hope even for the crazy beast eating grass in the field and camping out for seven years. Humble yourself and look up in reverence and respect to the God of heaven. He still delights in restoration.
LORD, relieve the pressure the Chinese government is exerting on believers. In Beijing give Pastor Jin Mingre and the Zion Church’s leadership wisdom and strength as they seek to continue shepherding their church family. And powerfully humble President Xi Jinping and change his heart towards you as you did Nebuchadnezzar.
