Some debts are fun when you are acquiring them, but none are fun when you set about retiring them. — Ogden Nash
I have a friend who weighed 330 pounds. He was walking with a cane because his joints couldn’t support his body, and he was only in his mid-forties. One day, my friend had a mind-changing experience. He realized his lifestyle needed to change.
So he changed the way he ate and started to ride his bike. At first, he couldn’t ride very far. Now he wakes up at 5:00am every morning so he can bike 36.5 miles to work. One way.
I made the ride with him one morning; and before we left, he took me into his garage and prayed, “Lord, thanks that we’re healthy and we can do this. Enable us to ride this bike all the way to work. Help me to make good choices with my food. Thanks, Lord. Amen.”
My friend realized that short of the Holy Spirit enabling him to live in a new way, there’s no way this is ever going to happen. So he gives himself to Jesus every day.
You’ve heard the incredible stories of people getting out of debt, and you’re like, “Oh man, that is so awesome! I wish I could do that.”
What you don’t see are the choices they make every day. You don’t see their insane sacrifices.
What if you gave your finances to Jesus every day? What would that look like?
What if, before you went out to run errands or grab groceries, you just prayed that God would enable you to spend well and spend wisely?
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)
Listen, the opposite of slavery is freedom. Paul was talking specifically about legalism here, but the principle could be applied to any kind of addiction. Jesus doesn’t want you in bondage. He wants you free.
Grab onto this. Pray it. Teach it to your kids. And choose wisely what will master you.
Lord, I have habits of spending to break. Grant me Your wisdom in spending and empower me to persevere in the marathon of paying off debt. Give me a new sense of freedom with every cent I pay down. And thank You for the ultimate freedom we have in You. Amen.
