Your guidelines for powerful daily living- Experiencing LIFE Today - September 28, 2018
Christian theologians sit and think… mostly sit. — ?
Like a thief in the night, Christ will return someday, catching many unprepared. That’s a big-picture view that we need to sit and think about, but not for very long. Sooner, rather than later, it should affect how we live. Days, months, years, decades… your entire life could be swallowed up by the demanding moment-by-moment details of life, or sitting around thinking but doing nothing. Don’t let that happen! These are unprecedented days and they will not go on forever. Christ has shown us through the cross and through His Word how we are to live during these days: By grace! By trusting in Him to live through us.
But I know some of you are still asking, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, but what are we supposed to do?” I’ll answer, “Okay, okay, okay—as long as you are committed to walking in the power of the Spirit rather than in the power of your own strength, I’ll go there.”
In short, because Jesus is coming back someday, we are to be helpful everyday. Paul gave us the specifics in 1 Thessalonians 5:
And we urge you, brothers,
- warn those who are idle,
- encourage the timid,
- help the weak,
- be patient with everyone.
- Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,
- but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
- Be joyful always;
- pray continually;
- give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
- Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;
- do not treat prophecies with contempt.
- Test everything.
- Hold on to the good.
- Avoid every kind of evil…
Go ahead and cut-and-paste that into your day-timer. If you were wondering what to do today, this should keep you occupied! Review the list. Consider specific ways to live out a few of the items. I say “go for it” as long as you remember Who is doing the work in you and through you! Paul concludes the list with this reminder:
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)
God, You are the one at work in us. By Your Spirit , through Your Word, I ask that You will speak to me clearly now. What specific things do You want to do through me to be helpful today? Lead me. Guide me. I trust You to do it through me. Amen.
