The rooster crows
Linda Buxa

“Peter declared, ‘Even if all fall away, I will not.’ ‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.’ But Peter insisted emphatically, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.’ And all the others said the same” (Mark 14:29-31).

We all want to be Peter, don’t we? In our hearts we want to believe with such fierce conviction that we would emphatically argue with Jesus. But we all know that Peter’s example of conviction was quickly followed by a loss of courage. I know that my example of conviction can quickly fade through fear, indifference, and callousness. I bet you have your own examples too.

But the rooster always crows.

For Peter it took a literal rooster to wake him up. For me and for you, it may take our consciences wrestling to the top or a friend who lovingly reminds us we are off the rails.

Maybe you are the one who sounds the call, with gentleness and respect, to the people around you. There are many who don’t know the ultimate sounding will be on judgment day, when it’s too late to rush out like Peter to cry and repent.

As a footnote . . . Peter lived the rest of his life with conviction, and the moment did come when he was crucified—because he would not disown Jesus.
