Call the doctor
Pastor Mark Jeske
The Lord God took great pains to prepare the world for the gift of Jesus Christ the Savior. Humanity had to wait thousands of years until God was ready. An entire nation was built from one couple, Abraham and Sarah, and that nation would one day give birth to the Messiah. Religious leadership was set up through priests and teachers to prepare that nation, Israel, for God’s supreme gift.
It is one of the appalling ironies of all time that so many in Israel, and so many of Israel’s religious leaders, were not interested in the Christ when he finally did come. Some felt self-sufficient because they trusted in their good works. Some felt safe because they were of the right families or chosen bloodline. Some felt confident because they trusted in the efficacy of the religious rituals they performed.
An even greater irony is that it was among the outcasts of society that Jesus found people who were aware that they were sick with sin and needed healing. “On hearing this, Jesus said, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. . . . I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners’” (Matthew 9:12,13).
Call the doctor! You have the disease too, the disease of sin. It’s congenital, it’s contagious, and it is always fatal. Only the soothing medicine of the gospel of Jesus can make you well again.
