The real thing
Pastor Mark Jeske

Most of us have absolutely no idea when we are going to die. At best, even as the day approaches, we have only hazy guesses. Jesus Christ, however, knew exactly how much time he had left on earth, for he knew in terrible detail how and when he would be slain. That means that he chose the content of his last teachings to his disciples with great care and that he designed carefully some important actions for their learning and encouragement in the upper room on that fateful Thursday evening. He gave them a demonstration of servant-leadership by humbly washing their feet.

And then he gave himself to them through the first ever sacramental meal we now call the Lord’s Supper: “Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins’” (Matthew 26:27,28).

He knew that his time on earth was mostly over and he would soon be returning to heaven. But he gave unspeakably great comfort and encouragement to his disciples by giving himself to them, the very blood that would soon be poured out for the forgiveness of their sins and guarantee of his continuing presence in their lives. Through the mystery and marvel of his powerful words, all believers from that day forward would absorb into themselves the very price of their salvation.

Every time you go to Communion, it’s the real thing.
