Our world is so violent
Pastor Mark Jeske

It sure seems to me that our world is getting more violent all the time. Knuckleheads with guns drive around the city, taking their revenge on their enemies right out in the open. Innocent people get shot on their porches and in their homes. Children get caught in the crossfire. Thieves steal anything unsecured; robbers look at people as their private banks and make their “withdrawals” whenever they see an opening. Worse, so many thugs seem to get away with their evil deeds. On top of that, our government authorities over the decades have been shown to practice discrimination and abuse of their use of force.

And yet, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The prophet Habakkuk many centuries before Christ grieved over how much violence and wrong there was in his world. He demanded of God, “Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds. Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails” (Habakkuk 1:3,4).

The world we live in is broken. We will never live in the Garden of Eden again this side of judgment day. The best we can hope for is some level of restraint on the forces of Satan and his demons. O Lord, deliver us from evil! Send your mighty angels to protect us and our children. Bring us home safely.

Perfect peace awaits us in heaven.
