You know enough right now
Pastor Mark Jeske

We pastors may be doing you a disservice if we overdo our constant encouragement to become better Bible readers. We mean well—really we do—but we can make you feel too ignorant, too incompetent, and too sinful to exercise a ministry for the Lord.

In fact, you are God’s royal priests. You have royal status and a call to ministry that come with your baptismal certificate. You do indeed need to stay in the Word your whole lifetime and never settle for yesterday’s level of understanding. But—you know enough right now to be useful to God. Paul writes, “I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another” (Romans 15:14).

Paul trusted their motives—the Christians in Rome had good hearts. You do too. Paul respected their biblical knowledge—they didn’t know everything but they knew enough. You do too. Paul encouraged them to feel competent to do with the Word what God intended—believe it first for yourself and then use it to help other people. You can too.

Not everyone in the church is a pastor. But all are priests with a holy, priestly ministry, i.e., opportunities to encourage other fools, strugglers, and sinners with the good news that there is hope for them in Christ Jesus.
