I hope her marriage is as good as mine
Jason Nelson

My wife and I got married as very young people by today’s standards. My approach wasn’t too sophisticated. I saw her one day in college. She looked good to me, so I got to know her. She still looked good to me, so I asked her to marry me. At some level I must have looked good to her because she said yes. We made a commitment to God and each other to stop looking and make a marriage.

Solomon said, “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord” (Proverbs 18:22). I’m not aware of any passage stating the converse is true, so I ought not to pretend I know what marriage is like for a woman. But I found what is good, and I hope it’s good for my wife too. I know it would be better for her if I really understood my God-given responsibility. “Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church—a love marked by giving, not getting” (Ephesians 5:25 MSG). I confess that early on I tried to make sure she understood her responsibilities. I had no right because I had no clue. I know I have some catching up to do.

I want her marriage to be as good as mine is because after all these years, she still looks good to me.
