Heaven is a lake cottage
Jason Nelson

While Martin Luther was at a big meeting in Augsburg (1530), he wrote to his son encouraging him to be a faithful boy. He described heaven in terms Hans would find appealing: “I know a pretty, lovely, pleasant garden, where many children go; they wear golden coats and gather nice apples, pears, cherries, and plums from under the trees; they sing, jump, and are merry. They also have pretty little horses with golden bridles and silver saddles” (Luther’s Works). Heaven is amazing, but the picture isn’t complete. Envisioning our own perfect place helps us long to be there.

What is your heaven? My heaven is a lake cottage. The shore is studded with whispering pines, and a long pier goes out into pristine water. Weed beds nearby hold plenty of scrappy bluegills. Within reach of a long cast is a deep edge where walleyes beg to be caught. Loons call, and it’s always a nice June evening with no mosquitoes.

John had a better revelation: “Before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. . . . And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. . . . He will wipe every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 4:2,3; 21:3,4).

Heaven is a perfect life with Jesus, and I know he likes to fish.
