Men and women
I listened to a young, Iranian, Christian woman describe how difficult her life had been in Iran. As is the case in many despotic societies, she had little value. She didn’t have equal protection under the law. She didn’t have the educational or financial opportunities men had. Because all women are inferior to all men there, she was always in danger. She faced the risk that any evening she could get into a taxi with a male driver and even though she was married she could be raped and nothing would be done about it. She had no self-esteem and no hope.
This message drew her to Christianity: “In Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26-28). It changed her life. In Christ she had equality with men. In Christ she had human dignity. In Christ she had an equal share of redemption and eternal life. And if it came to giving up her body rather than giving up that faith, she was prepared to do it.
High on the list of things that must distinguish Christianity from other religions, or no religion, is the way Christian men treat women. In Christ, Christian men honor women. Christian men respect women. Christian men advocate for women as equals.
