The eyes of the Lord
Pastor Mark Jeske
I hope you get a chance to see some fireworks around this U.S. national holiday. They are not only stunningly beautiful in the summer night sky, but they remind those of us living here that we are at peace. Some people right now in other parts of the world hear the thump of real artillery and see the fiery strings of real machine gun tracer rounds. Independence Day fireworks in the U.S. are also subtle reminders of the cost in lives and treasure of the great wars that formed this country, ended slavery, and kept the Union together.
But our true security is not in the size and sophistication of our military strength. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. . . . From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind. . . . He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do. No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. . . . But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love” (Psalm 33:12-18).
We enjoy the blessings of God upon us to the degree that we are attuned to his agenda. It’s never too late to go through your own personal repentance and renewal. It’s never too late to invest your energy, talents, and time into your congregation’s ministries. It’s never too late for a nationwide Christian revival of Word and Spirit.
