June 14
Fly it proudly
Jason Nelson

My mother’s birthday was June 14th. There were always flags and lots of bunting displayed on that day. There were even some small-town parades. My mom was a trustworthy woman, but she told her children it was all for her birthday. I think I was ten before I figured out there wasn’t a national observance of the day my mother was born. It was Flag Day.

If the United States has a sacred artifact, it’s our flag. It’s right up there with the Constitution. The stars and stripes are symbols of our beginning and progress as a nation. I’ve pledged allegiance to it, raised it up a school-yard pole, seen it draped over coffins, watched it be planted on the surface of the moon, and cringed as it burned in protest. I’m always careful to fold it properly because it’s the emblem of the country I love.

Symbols convey a message with straightforward power. Think of what a cross, a chalice, and an empty tomb mean to us as Christians. Appreciate what a red, white, and blue piece of cloth means to us as Americans. Brave people died under this banner. And countless others are still inspired by it. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12).And especially blessed is the nation that flies Old Glory.

You have the power to change your world!

The Bible tells the story of how God reformed a misshaped world through Jesus. How you see yourself fitting into that story shapes you. And as you reach out to share that story, it can’t help but shape the world around you!
