When you thought I wasn’t looking
Pastor Daron Lindemann
Sometimes it’s fun being a dad, like when you’re firing up the grill or taking the perfect dad nap. Sometimes it’s not that fun, like house repairs that never end.
Being a dad, however, is a 24/7 job. Dads can’t just flip a switch and take a break when the going gets tough. And all the while, someone is watching.
There’s a Bible verse in Proverbs that says, “My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways” (23:26).A father who wants the heart of his child wants his child to always watch and learn.
“Dad, when you thought I wasn’t looking . . . I saw you repair my pinewood derby car and I learned that love is often in the small things. . . . I saw you pray and I learned I could talk to God and trust him. . . . I saw tears in your eyes when Grandma died and I learned it’s okay to cry. . . . I watched the person you are and realized that I wanted to be like you.”
Fathers, take heart that even though your example of Christian faith and love has, at times, faltered, God still wants you to be a protector, provider, and Christian role model for your children. God is the perfectly faithful Father to you and your children, and they see him through you.
And you through him.
You have the power to change your world!
The Bible tells the story of how God reformed a misshaped world through Jesus. How you see yourself fitting into that story shapes you. And as you reach out to share that story, it can’t help but shape the world around you!
