Speak up for moms and their children
Mother’s Day is coming up soon. Ads constantly remind us that the women in our lives would love flowers, chocolate, breakfast in bed, and jewelry. The abundance of pink cards praises the women who nurture, protect, and raise the next generation.
Still, I can’t stop thinking that while individually we value mothers, we undervalue the children—some are willing to dispose of them before they are even born. But Psalm 139:13,14 tells us that mothers and children are inextricably linked: “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
I can’t change the entire culture, but I can influence the one around me. As Mother Teresa said: “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.” If you have some spare change, support pro-life groups, those who have resources to spread the message that each life is valuable. If you have time, volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center. If you have baby items, donate them to a women’s shelter.
Finally, I know women who have had abortions. Sometimes Mother’s Day isn’t happy for them. They either have suffered or are still suffering, carrying guilt and sadness. When you plead the case for the unborn, remember to also love the already born. Adding to their burden doesn’t help. Their guilty consciences won’t pay for that sin. Jesus is the only one who can; he’s the one who already did.
