November 11
Sleepless nights
Linda Buxa

You would think that David, the king of Israel, would have had it easy because he had servants and officials. (I’m pretty sure a chef and a maid would make my life so much easier.) But that’s not what David said. Instead, he wrote that he was exhausted because of the problems he faced. “I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes” (Psalm 6:6,7).

Maybe you don’t have enemy armies fighting against you the way David did, but you’re in the middle of a spiritual battle (and you will be your whole life here on earth). This means you know what sleepless nights are like.

For some it’s not being able to fall asleep at night, and others wake in the middle of the night. It’s because nighttime seems to be when our minds flood with worries about bills, loneliness, children, work, finances, relationships, and health.

This is when you most need the reminder that your Jesus hasn’t left you hopeless or alone. Because he already fought your biggest battle on your behalf, he is your safe place to rest in the middle of the rest of your battles.

Then, just like David, you get to say, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).
