I don’t know

For us pastors, three words that come very hard from our lips are I don’t know. We try so hard to have answers from the Word for all your questions, but God’s activity in human history is so vast and his Word is often so very terse, that we need to exercise some humility about the limits of our understanding. And that’s okay.

An example: Genesis chapter 5 hints at the life of an amazing man named Enoch, an ancestor of Christ, a powerful witness to the Word, one of the seventh generation of humans on earth. “By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away” (Hebrews 11:5). Enoch went straight to heaven and bypassed the grave. Why is he an exception to the iron law of human death? Ahem . . . I don’t know.

God has demonstrated such integrity that even if I don’t know the reason, I know there is a good reason. I look forward to meeting Enoch and hearing more of his story. There’s much, much more that I do not know. But I do know this—God made me, God loves me, Christ died and rose for me, the Spirit lives in me, and my name is written on the palm of his hand so that he’s never, ever going to forget me.
