Limits to Satan’s power
Pastor Mark Jeske
Some weaknesses we don’t mind admitting. There’s no shame in being tempted by chocolate, shopping, sports cars, or celebrity magazines. Other weaknesses are terrible and no one must ever know—extreme alcohol consumption, reckless gambling, violence in the home, embezzlement at work, or the urge to betray your spouse in an affair.
It’s not just other people who have to struggle with seductive evil. Every one of us is flawed and cracked, and Satan is at us every day with a crowbar, trying to get the tip in. He wants to turn the cracks into gaping fissures. He wants to tempt us into acts and thoughts of rebellion so often that we give up our faith and assume that we are his helpless slaves.
What a relief it is to find out that our kindly Father knows that we are weak and doesn’t despise us for it. Not only has his Son purchased forgiveness for our sins of the past, but he sends his Spirit to help us with temptations of today and tomorrow: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear” (1 Corinthians 10:13). Think of it—God actually sets limits to how Satan can come at us. He keeps the temptations within our range of coping with them with God’s help. His Word and Spirit within us give us both the knowledge and power we need to resist the devil so that he will flee from us.
