April 7 & 8, 2007 – The Promise of the Resurrection – John 11:17-27

In the world of modern medicine, body parts can be replaced by plastic and metal. Human beings are kept alive by machines. And some people even choose to preserve their bodies after death in hopes of being re-animated at some point in the future. All of this tinkering may make us feel more comfortable for a while. But it can’t keep us from dying. Man is powerless in the face of death.

Some people are frightened by the fact that death is unavoidable. But, for believers, the end of physical life should be greatly anticipated. They are about to see the Lord.  Jesus’ victory over the grave took away death’s sting. Through Him, we’re made righteous. The Lord looks upon our cleansed soul and welcomes us into Heaven. 2 Corinthians 5:8 indicates that believers "absent from the body” are “at home with the Lord.” The very thing which causes fear and uncertainty becomes a sure doorway to eternity with God.

In addition, Christ’s resurrection assures believers their place in Heaven is secure. The night before His crucifixion, Jesus spoke about His Father’s house to the disciples. In John 14:2-3, He says, “I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:2-3).

Believers shouldn’t fear death. The Lord has numbered our days on Earth. And when our time comes, we’ll join Him in the place Jesus has prepared. We’ll share in Christ’s victory over the grave.
