July 26, 2007 – The Struggle with Doubt – James 1:5-8

Hebrews 11:1 says faith is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Trusting biblical promises require faith. At salvation, we believe we are sinners under a sentence of death. But we are saved by God through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. We also understood that God adopted us as His children, and we would live with Him in heaven forever.

Since then, many of us have struggled to believe consistently that God’s promises are true. Or that they apply to us. Faith has been mixed with doubt. Sometimes, our own uneasiness about wrong choices causes us to question God’s love or forgiveness. At other times, we wonder whether our needs have been met. If prayers aren’t answered as we expect, we may ask if God cares or if He even has the power to help. And in the face of relentless temptation, we may start thinking He hasn’t provided a way out. In such instances, we’re allowing feelings and circumstances to determine our beliefs.

Uncertainty will transform to confidence in the Lord when we begin to read God’s Word daily. The Bible can be trusted because the author, God Himself, is trustworthy. As we study its pages, the Holy Spirit helps us overcome doubt and teaches us how to live victoriously.

Jesus invites us to bring our burden of doubt to Him. As Matthew 11:28 says, we can trust that He will give us rest from it.
