Handing Down Our Faith
The idea of leaving an inheritance prompts people to think of possessions, property, and money to be divided among family members. As believers, we need to contemplate the spiritual heritage we leave behind. A spiritual inheritance is not a denominational tie or pet doctrine, but rather the set of principles that govern our life.
Instructing children in the ways of God is how faith is handed down. Biblical teaching—expressed not just in words but also in actions—should permeate our life and home. Getting out the six-inch-deep leather Bible and making a show of opening it is not nearly as effective as a lifestyle that reflects scriptural principles; instruction is most constructive when it occurs naturally over dinner or during a family outing. Never miss an opportunity to weave God’s truth into everyday conversation, or as Moses explained, “talk about [God’s laws] when you sit at home and when you walk along the road” (v. 7 niv). As we share personal experiences of God’s provision and care, children learn He is trustworthy.
Many parents recognize the importance of passing down their faith but are unsure how to begin. An excellent starting point is discussing the things that interest and concern our sons and daughters. We can ask questions and listen to their stories and opinions. If we approach them with an open mind and willing ears instead of judgment and chastisement, we can learn where their ideas originate. And we can guide them to see how God fits into their daily life.
The greatest inheritance we can leave our children is not money or property, but a godly example.
