October 17, 2007 – Reassurance About the Believer’s Judgment – 2 Corinthians 5:9-10

The Bible describes two kinds of judgments—one for those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and one for those who do. The believer’s judgment is an evaluation of the person’s life. While that may sound alarming, three key facts can assure us about who will be judging.

Identity. According to John 5:22, our judge will be God’s Son—Jesus Christ, who laid down His life for our sake and did everything necessary to bring us into God’s family. As our advocate (1 John 2:1), He already speaks to the Father on our behalf and intercedes for us faithfully. With Jesus as our evaluator, we have no reason to fear.

Character. Christ’s holy nature ensures that He will always be fair in all His actions. He is omniscient—that means He will not make any decisions based on insufficient or faulty information. His character is perfect, so He will neither make any mistakes in His pronouncements nor treat certain people more favorably than others.

Purpose. Jesus will evaluate our lives to recompense us for what we’ve done while in our earthly body (2 Corinthians 5:10). The believer’s judgment has to do with rewards, not chastisement. At the cross, the Savior has already stood in our place and borne the punishment for our sin (1 Peter 2:24).

As Christians, we have much to look forward to—a new body, the absence of death and pain, and the presence of Jesus forever. We do not have to fear the time of judgment, because we can trust our Judge and His intentions.
