Two Happy Ethiopians - May 1

Two Happy Ethiopians

Philip began with this same Scripture and then used many others to tell him the Good News about Jesus (Acts 8:35).

Dear friends:

During a trip to Washington, D.C., I had an opportunity to talk with a taxi driver on the way to the airport.

When I discovered he was an Ethiopian, I reminded him of the Ethiopian eunuch mentioned in Acts chapter 8.  This is when "(Phillip) started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet" (27-28, NIV).

The Ethiopian did not understand what he was reading in Isaiah chapter 53 about the coming Messiah, but when Phillip explained the passage, the man believed in Jesus and even asked to be baptized.  "When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing" (v. 39).

I asked the taxi driver if he remembered that story, and he said he did.  He explained that he was active in his church and had knowledge of the Bible.  However, when I asked him if he knew Christ personally, he replied that he did not.  He knew Jesus only as a religious leader whom he admired and respected.

I then explained to him the importance of receiving Christ by faith, and with great joy he responded. He pulled the taxicab over to the side of the road and, as we prayed together, he received Christ.  As we departed, this Ethiopian went on his way rejoicing, just as the eunuch of old.

Let me ask you, do you tell others you meet throughout the day about our Lord Jesus?  Or do you fail to share your faith in Christ for fear of rejection, or that you will do an inadequate job of representing our Lord?  Perhaps you remain silent because you think that you are too shy to share your faith in Christ with another person.

It may surprise you, but like many other people, I have never found witnessing to come naturally and easily, for I too am very shy and reserved.  Yet God uses Christians just like you and me, from all walks of life, to effectively tell others of their faith in Christ and God's great love for them every day.

Step out in faith and tell others!  The same Holy Spirit who helped Phillip will also help you.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
