Too Much Counsel
By: Rick Boxx
June 20, 2013

Seeking counsel is wise, but it also requires discernment to choose the right counsel. In 1 Kings 12, the Israelites had been oppressed by Solomon and later asked his successor, Rehoboam, for relief.

After hearing their complaints, Rehoboam sought the counsel of Solomon’s wise elders. They urged Rehoboam to listen to his subjects. If he did, they assured him that the people would serve him willingly forever.

1 Kings 12:8 says, “But Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with young men who grew up with him and served him.”

Rehoboam listened to foolish counsel and treated the Israelites even more harshly. It eventually destroyed his kingdom.

Seeking counsel is prudent, but it’s just as important to discern wisdom from foolishness.
