Who is God?
I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Deuteronomy 32:3-4
Who is God? Is He the sentimentalized, soft, meek, mild and whimpy person we see depicted in some artist’s portrayal of Jesus?
It’s an important question, both for our eternal and present well-being. If we are unaware, second-guess, or maintain false conceptions of God’s goodness, wisdom, and power, we will surely have trouble giving ourselves to Him in faith, love, and obedience. Consequently, we’ll distance ourselves from Him and strive to live upon our own resources. You see, false conceptions of God necessarily lead to false conceptions of ourselves, the nature of our problems, and the way to their solutions.
However, if we see a complete picture of who God is—that is, as He’s revealed Himself to us—we’ll realize that we’re safe in His fatherly keeping. Yes, God is loving, compassionate and full of tender mercies. At the same time He’s a powerful warrior, a lion, robed in splendor and majesty.
