Bread of Life

Today's reading: John 6:22-71

In this passage, Jesus lays out who He is and God's plan of salvation for all people. He engages in conversation with the crowd of people who have sought Him out in Capernaum and call themselves His followers.

"'For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day... Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh'" (vs. 40 and 47-51).

It's a message the people aren't expecting to hear and one that they don't fully understand. Jesus is conveying spiritual truth, but those gathered around Him are thinking literally about Jesus's words (bread meaning bread you eat for physical sustenance and life) rather than thinking spiritually (bread of life, eating of his flesh, drinking his blood as meaning Jesus offering up His body and shedding His blood as a sacrifice to enable them to have eternal life).

What does Jesus being the "bread of life" mean to you personally? How would you explain it to someone who doesn't yet have a personal relationship with Christ? Tami
