Placing of the Seal

Now those who placed their seal on the document were: Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah,  Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah, Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah, Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah,  Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch, Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin, Maaziah, Bilgai, and Shemaiah. These were the priests. - Nehemiah 10:1-8

We have come to the place, in the book of Nehemiah where things are rapidly closing. Nehemiah had all the people gather to a place where they would put their seal on an important document. They were making a covenant––an agreement––to follow the ways of the Lord.

Interestingly, when we give our lives to the Lord and become saved, He seals us with His Holy Spirit. What does this mean? It is a mark of divine ownership––we belong to the Lord.Ephesians 1:13-14 tells us:

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, whois the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

The Holy Spirit is the confirmation of God’s promise to us: …who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee(2 Corinthians 1:22). What exactly is our guarantee? As Jesus has purchased us by His blood (1Peter 1:18-19), it is as if He made a down payment for our lives. The Holy Spirit was given as a guarantee, until He fully redeems our body, and brings us into eternity to live with Him always.

Knowing this precious promise, what manner of life should we be living?

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
~Ephesians 4:30~
