Please, No Divisions, Among Us

Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. - 1 Corinthians 1:10

As Paul was writing this letter to the Corinthians, he started out on the subject of peace; but before he could continue, he had to change course to address the problems of division in the body of Christ. Paul is speaking to believers in the church; not non-believers. These Christians needed to be united, not divided.

Why was there division among the believers in Corinth? Many believers in the church had become carnal Christians––under the control of their fleshly appetites. It was not just being in a sexual sin that made these Corinthian believers carnal. Carnality is immaturity. Those who were carnal had become division makers, and they caused considerable strife.

You can always recognize a carnal Christian because their words cause division. When people become jealous or angry, instead of building up the body of Christ, they begin to tear others down. Be careful not to get infected by carnal people’s gossip. Be careful with your own mouth! Gossip can create a big mess. Others can grab hold of what has been said and gossip begins to spread. Remember, what we say can affect anyone around us, including our kids.

Those who truly walk by the power of the Holy Spirit bring peace and not problems. That is a sign of maturity. Chuck Smith always used to say, “Let’s disagree agreeably.” Why cause division? Why not work together in harmony with the Holy Spirit? We need to examine what comes out of our mouths. Seriously, are your words bringing peace or division?

Satan always hates Christian fellowship; it is his policy to keep Christians apart. Anything which can divide saints from one another he delights in… Since union is strength, he does his best to promote separation.
