Hedging Heaven’s Bet
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” >Luke 23:42–43
As Jesus was dying on the cross, He had a thief on either side of Him. One of them mocked Jesus and the other one asked Him to be remembered when Jesus went to heaven. At that very moment, that split second, when the thief asked to be remembered, he was saved. Jesus listened to his plea and assured him that he would be with Him in paradise. This guy didn’t have to prove himself to Jesus; he didn’t have to pray a flowery prayer. He simply asked to be with Jesus. Wonder what was going through the mind of this thief? What a relief it had to be to know he’d be in heaven! The thought of being in heaven with Jesus, the King of Kings, should keep us hopeful, however dark our days. The thief knew where he wanted to spend eternity and humbly asked for it. Thank God our Father lets us do the same.
Sweet Freedom in Action
Just like the thieves, we need to make a choice: either to live life with God or without Him. No matter how enticing culture tries to make the alternative, I’ve always seen it as the better bet to believe in and trust in God.
