Awkward Truth

Acts 2:36-37 (NIV®)

“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

The events of Acts 2 occurred during Pentecost, a Jewish holiday celebrated fifty days after Passover. Verse 2 says “God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven” were in Jerusalem for the occasion. The Holy Spirit had been poured out on the believers in the city, and a crowd had gathered. In the midst of this, Peter stood and said, “You crucified the Messiah.” That’s a tough message for people who had been keeping God’s rules and looking forward to the coming of a messiah for hundreds of years. Even today, the Jesus-story is awkward and uncomfortable until you decide to receive it―that you’re not inherently good, that you can’t earn your way to heaven, that your kindness and goodness are far short of the standards of Almighty God, that you’re a sinner who needs a Savior. Jesus died on a cross not simply because the Romans put Him there; He died on a cross because of my ungodliness. That message hasn’t been diminished by two thousand years, and it still takes courage to stand for Jesus.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the Jesus-story. I choose to receive it and to receive Jesus as Lord. I believe that Jesus died on a cross for my sins. I recognize that I cannot earn His salvation. I need a Savior. I ask you to be Lord of my life. I want to serve You in every area of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
