Courageous Belief

Luke 8:49-50

Someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher any more.” Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

A synagogue ruler named Jairus has come to Jesus and asked for help because his daughter is sick, and it’s quite an expression of humility on Jairus’s part. He’s a part of the religious establishment, and Jesus is just a traveling rabbi with no authority in the official religious system of the nation. They’re headed to Jairus’s home, and a messenger comes to tell him his daughter is dead. Jesus’ response must’ve seemed odd: “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” There will be times in your life when believing in God will take tremendous courage. In retrospect, I can see that my most challenging seasons were my most fruitful seasons, but at the time it took every ounce of strength I had to say to the Lord, “I believe in You. I’m going to walk with You on this one.” Belief in God is a lifelong journey, not something you will achieve and put on the shelf to admire. It’s an ongoing process in my life, but it has brought security in God’s faithfulness that I couldn’t have obtained any other way.

Heavenly Father, I’m choosing to walk out my circumstances with You. My situation may not be what I would prefer, but I wait in anticipation for the things I will learn through it. I thank You in advance for how we will walk through this season together. In Jesus’ name, amen.
