Faith from Desperate Places

Luke 8:41-42 (NIV®)

Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

Did you know faith can come from desperate places? Jairus, a synagogue ruler and a man of authority, not only approached Jesus, an itinerant rabbi, but fell on his face at His feet. This was an incredible expression of humility and desperation and faith. Many times we imagine that faith in God comes from simply studying, and I’m sure sometimes it does. But the reality is that faith is often borne in places of desperation, when we feel like our faces are in the dust. If you’re in that kind of place today, I want you to know you’re not beyond God. He hasn’t abandoned you. He’s not angry with you. He may have brought you to a place of desperation so that you can have a new revelation of His character. I wouldn’t go in search of a desperate place. But if you find yourself in one, know that God is close to you and waiting for you to cry out to Him.

Heavenly Father, thank You for meeting me in my weakest moments of doubt and uncertainty. I honor You as my refuge and strength, my ever-present help in trouble. I acknowledge that You are always near and waiting for me to humble myself and cry out to You. Give me increasing faith to trust You in all the circumstances of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
