Revelation 1:12-13

I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone “like a son of man,” dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.

In this opening chapter of Revelation, the seven lampstands symbolize seven churches. Not surprisingly, that’s where we find Jesus: standing in the midst of His churches. The attention of Jesus in the earth is focused upon His Church. “Church” is not about a denomination, tradition, label, or location; it is a universal word that includes every person who believes in Jesus Christ. Jesus said He would build His Church and hell itself wouldn’t be able to withstand it. The New Testament says when He comes to earth again He’s coming for His Church. If you want to invest yourself in something of significance in the Kingdom of God, be a person who strengthens the Church, the body of Christ. We’re an imperfect lot, and we will disappoint you. God loves us and has made provision for our inconsistencies, but those same inconsistencies cause many of the disappointments in our lives. It is a paradox, but the great weakness of the Church―people―is also its great strength. The Church matters to Jesus, so let’s commit ourselves to be about the business of building it until He returns.

Heavenly Father, how I love Your Church! Thank You for allowing me to work and worship in the midst of Your people. Help me to strengthen those in my circle of influence, that the body of Christ will draw nearer to You as the day approaches when Jesus will return for His Church. I ask for Your grace and mercy and power to press on toward that day. In the name of Jesus, amen.
