Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
I attended Oral Roberts University many years ago. President Roberts used to say, “God is a good God, and the devil is a bad devil.” As a young man I thought that was an oversimplification, but I’ve come to appreciate the wisdom of those words. It comes down to this: God wants good for you, and Satan intends to destroy you. Most of us imagine we can manage the devil. We think we can walk with him awhile and then say, “That’s as far as I want to go. I’ll head back now.” But it just doesn’t work out that way. Whenever I’ve entertained evil, it has brought tremendous destruction. And when I’ve walked with God, He’s brought good things to my life. The tug-of-war of these two perspectives seems to be the dilemma of human existence. When you feel that tug, remember: God is a good God, and the devil is a bad devil.
Heavenly Father, You know every detail, every circumstance of my life. You know when I am weak and tempted. Yet I know that Your power is greater than every wicked spirit that has stood against Your purposes in my life, and that Your power is available to me. I submit to God and resist the devil. In the authority of Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
