Whatever the Cost
Matthew 4:18-20 (NIV®)
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
As Jesus invited men to follow Him and become His disciples, they were faced with the choice to leave everything they knew to travel with Him around the land of Israel. The story is so familiar to us that we tend to overlook the disruption it must have meant to their lives. Do you think their friends questioned their sanity? Do you think their families were concerned? Do you think these brothers might have had to change their plans to buy another boat and expand their business? We may not be called to leave everything behind to follow Jesus, but we are called to make His priorities our priorities and to embrace His perspectives―even when it might cause change and disruption in our lives.
THINK ABOUT IT
Did your decision to follow Jesus require you to leave anything behind? Has your embrace of His priorities and perspectives caused tension in any of your relationships? How has He rewarded your faithfulness to Him?
Heavenly Father, Your plans and purposes are high above all human thought. Thank You for calling me to follow You. Whatever the cost, I choose today to know You above everything else. Help me to walk in such a way that my life will bring honor to Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
