God In Us
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV®)
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
The image of our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit is a little hard for us to grasp. But to a first-century audience, particularly one of Jewish orientation, it would have been very significant because the Temple was at the center of their lives. One of the radical aspects of Paul’s teaching was that he took away the focus on the Jerusalem Temple. He said, “God is living in you, so now your body is the temple.” This realization helps us make daily decisions that honor the Lord. For example, don’t take the temple any place you wouldn’t take the Lord. If you wouldn’t say it in the temple, it probably doesn’t need to be said. If you wouldn’t show it on a big screen in the temple, you probably don’t need to see it. This simple change in perspective will help us grow in spiritual maturity and learn to cooperate with God’s purposes for our lives.
THINK ABOUT IT
God gave us a free will, but He also says there are some things that are not good for us. How can thinking of your body as a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit help you make life-decisions?
Heavenly Father, thank You for providing the help of the Holy Spirit to open my eyes and help me see and hear from Your Word. I rejoice that You are watching over my life. Thank You that through the blood of Jesus Christ, I have been redeemed out of the hand of the devil and all my sins are forgiven. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit—redeemed and cleansed by the blood of Jesus. Therefore Satan has no place in me and no power over me, through the blood of Jesus. You are my Hope and my Redeemer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
