Trust through the Storm

Acts 27:22-24 (NIV®)

I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, “Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.”

Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem and subjected to a fixed trial. We find him chained to a Roman soldier on a ship bound for Rome, where he will appeal his case to Caesar. And that’s when the storms begin. They’ve been battered for days. The sailors have thrown the cargo overboard. All hope is lost, and they are waiting to die. And then an angel shows up. I object a bit to God’s timing. He could have sent Paul this message before he left Jerusalem and given the weary apostle a few more peaceful days of sailing. But God needed to tell Paul—and those who sailed with him—that because He had more work for Paul to do, He would spare the lives of everyone on the ship. And Paul, as always, took the opportunity to remind them that he belonged to a great God.

Heavenly Father, You know that I sometimes have trouble seeing You, much less trusting You when the storms of life are raging all around me. Thank You that the message of Your angel was not just for Paul—it is also for me. Thank You for the purposes You have for my life. Give me courage to speak for You even if I find myself in chains for bearing Your name. It’s in Jesus’ name that I pray, amen.
