“Establish Your word and confirm Your promise to Your servant (daughter), which is for those who reverently fear and devotedly worship You.”

Psalm 119:38
Amplified Bible

“Daughters of Deborah”

“Solid devotions resemble the rivers which run under the earth – they steal from the eyes of the world to seek the eyes of God; and it often happens that those of whom we speak least on earth, are best known in heaven.”

Nicolas Caussin

To what or to whom have I devoted my heart and soul?

“As down in the sunless retreats of the ocean,
Sweet flowers are springing no mortal can see,
So deep in my soul the still prayer of devotion unheard by the world,
Rises silent to Thee.”

Thomas Moore

“And Deborah, a prophetess, …she judged Israel at that time.  And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah…and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.”

Judges 4:4-5
King James Version

I have been blessed in my life to have many wonderful female role models beginning with my mother and grandmother. It has been wonderful Christian women who have helped me gain a vision for what God desires from His daughters.  I only pray that I will be half as good an example to the next generation that follows, as the women who have carried a torch ahead of me have been.

As we have studied the life of Deborah over the past few weeks, I began to see this “torch-carrying” woman of light, as we learned, to be one of Scripture’s most outstanding mentors.  And as I reflected on the example of Deborah, I began to think about her effect on you and me in the 21st century.

Thousands of years after Deborah lived; you and I here in Transformation Garden, are being infused by the holiness and beauty of her life.  Her example lives on – and her exemplary life still stands today as a beacon of light for God’s daughters.

In fact, I like to call all of us, “Daughters of Deborah” for don’t we want to do and to be in our generation what Deborah was in her lifetime.  As I’ve studied about this woman of God, I have found five specific characteristics that Deborah possessed that I’m asking God to bring into my life.

Here are the 5 characteristics found in Deborah and in those who follow God as “Daughters of Deborah:”

Characteristic 1 – A devoted daughter.

Characteristic 2 – A diligent daughter.

Characteristic 3 – A determined daughter.

Characteristic 4 – A daring daughter.

Characteristic 5 – A daughter who becomes a deliverer.

Today, we begin looking at characteristic 1 – a devoted daughter.

In Judges 4: 4,5 we are told that God called Deborah to not only be a “prophetess” but a “judge.”

While some may feel that being prophets and judges were jobs for the men, God obviously doesn’t call us using “gender” as criteria.  As we discovered in past studies, all God needs is “willing-hearted” people – men, women and children.  In Deborah, God not only found someone willing, but someone who was devoted.

Author Douglas V. Steere, in Prayer and Worship observes that being devoted is not, “a thing which passes, which comes and goes, as it were, but it is something habitual, fixed, permanent, which extends over every instant of life and regulates all our conduct.”

If you take this statement and apply it directly to Deborah’s life as recorded in Judges 4: 5, “and she (Deborah) dwelt under the palm of Deborah,” I think there is a very distinct picture of devotion given to us in this one text alone.  It was under this palm tree where the children of Israel came for spiritual guidance and Deborah was so devoted to the work of God that a specific tree – a specific geographic location was named after her.

I tried to picture a conversation some of the people may have had at a time when they needed encouragement desperately in Israel:

“Let’s go up the road to the palm of Deborah,” one person said.

“Yes, you can count on Deborah being there with a word of refreshment.”

"What’s more, because of her devotion to God, we can trust that her words will give us what we need from God.”

I ask you, do your friends say, “Let’s go to _________ house.  She’s committed to God.  Her devotion to God makes it possible for her to speak ‘words in season for us today?’”

As a daughter of Deborah, I know I want to have my life filled with a heavenly devotion that radiates the refreshment, joy and hope of my Father’s heavenly love.

In some of his final words to the children of Israel, Moses encouraged them to be “devoted” in their walk with God.  These words apply to us today as daughters of Deborah: “Fear the Lord your God, walk in all His way…love Him and serve the Lord your God with all your mind, heart and with your entire being.”

“Daughters of Deborah” are 100% devoted to God, their Father.

“When I am with God
My fear is gone
In the great quiet of God,
My troubles are as the pebbles on the road,
My joys are like the everlasting hills.”

Walter Rauschenbusch
The Little Gate to God

“In Thee, would we lose ourselves utterly; do in us what Thou wilt.”

Jakob Boehme

“Be Thou a light unto my eyes, music to mine ears, sweetness to my taste, and full contentment to my heart.  Be Thou my sunshine in the day, my food at table, my repose in the night, my clothing in nakedness, and my succour in all necessities.  Lord Jesus, I give Thee my body, my soul, my substance, my fame, my friends, my liberty and my life.  Dispose of me and all that is mine as it may seem best to Thee and to the glory of Thy blessed name.”

John Cosin
