A Test of Faith
by Berni Dymet
Mark 7:27-29 He said to her, "Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." But she answered him, "Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Then he said to her, "For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter."
Sometimes, sometimes God seems pretty unreasonable. Take the time that a women - she wasn't a Jew, not one of God's Chosen people - she comes to Jesus and asks Him to cast a demon out of her daughter. In fact she begs Him.
Jesus though, he turns around and basically - well, He appears to tell her to get lost because she's not Jewish - He says Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs. He in effect calls her a dog - which is the Jewish term for gentiles. Pretty rugged stuff.
But she replies, even the dogs under the table eat the crumbs.
And at that moment, He sets her daughter free.
Sometimes, God seems to hide Himself in difficult circumstances. Sometimes, He appears totally unreasonable.
But I wonder whether at those times, if He's not helping you and me to sort out in our own hearts, how serious we are about Him.
