What are some practical guidelines for evangelizing well?
  1. Pray. Jesus said, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him” John 6:44 . Salvation is God’s work, so we should ask him to do it.
  2. Ask questions and provoke self-reflection. Ask good questions that provoke people to reflect on their lives, their beliefs, and the claims you’re making. And then listen to their answers! It will help you better understand them and their concerns.
  3. Use the Bible. When we use the Bible to evangelize our friends, we should show them that we’re not merely offering them our private ideas—we’re telling them what God has revealed about himself, our sin, and his Son.
  4. Be clear. When we use words like “God” or “sin,” people might have very different ideas about what those words mean. So define crucial terms like “sin” and “faith.” Make sure your hearer understands exactly what you’re telling him.
  5. Use the church. You should certainly invite a person whom you’re evangelizing to come to your church so that they can hear the gospel. But the church has far more to offer our evangelism. Jesus said, “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35, NIV). And in Ephesians 3:10 Paul says that the church is a display of God’s wisdom even to the heavenly beings! The church is meant to be a real-life picture of the message you’re preaching, so invite your non-Christian friends to take a good, long look.
