“Dave, how did your hike with your sons go?” Dr. Hawkins, the president of Southern Bible where I teach, knew about my trip to upstate New York to climb Haystack. I gave him a quick recap, expressing how much my Wyrtzen tribe loves the deep woods and the mountains. “Well, don’t ask me to go on one of your trips. Give me a good La-Z- Boy and the Cowboys on the Big Screen. I might stay behind in a nice mountain cabin and have some good Texas chili and cornbread waiting when you take off your boots after hiking, but absolutely no cold and wet exposure for me!”
Dr. Hawkins is “pure city”—raised near Camden, New Jersey. He has absolutely no delight for backcountry living and mountain trails, but there’s one internal passion we both share—a love for the wise paths God reveals in Scripture.
“Then you will discern God’s standards, learn how to apply them, and know how to do this with fairness and grace. You will discern God’s good path. For wisdom will enter the core of your being. Intimate relationship with God based on knowledge will be your delight. Discretion will keep watch over you. Godly street smarts will protect you.” Proverbs 2:9-12
Dr. Hawkins’ soul might not be one with the mountains, but it is with God’s Word. Right after our conversation he was on fire as he explained to our Tuesday evening students how to pray and, like Nehemiah, get things done.
LORD, Solomon promised his son right at the beginning of Proverbs that he would help him internalize Your standards, develop the discipline to apply them, and to do this with fairness and skill (Prov. 1:3). Thanks for underlining the absolute importance of internalizing Your righteous standards by repeating the same words again in the verses I meditated on today. Keep my core filled with passion and love for Your Word.
