Truth Trampled Down

Daniel 8:9-14

In Genesis 1 when God speaks, things come into existence. When God says, “Let there be light!”  There is light.  This is the unique power of the Creator alone, and one of Satan’s biggest lies is to convince us that we possess this same super power. All tyrants fall victim to this illusion. They tell gigantic lies; tell them often, and soon the masses believe.

In 1928 Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf,  “.. in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus, in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than a small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters, but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.”

In this passage, Hitler told a whopper. He blamed the defeat of Germany in World War I on the Jews, and this is the lie that led Germans to justify the extermination of millions of Jews in the gas chambers. Hitler did this in the middle of the 20th century, but a minor Syrian king did this a little more than a century before Jesus.  Daniel warned his people against this threat 350 years before Antiochus IV sent his troops into Jerusalem to stop the daily sacrifices, to set up a statue of himself in the Holy of Holies, and demand that the Jews assimilate to Greek culture

“After the death of Alexander, out of one of the four horns that rose up out of his Empire, another horn came up. It was little at first and then grew in power pushing to the south, to the east, and toward the Beautiful Land. It grew in power until it challenged the hosts of heaven. It threw some of the starry host to the ground and trampled them down. It installed itself up to be as great as the Prince of the host; taking away the daily sacrifice from his sanctuary.

The host was given over to him along with the cessation of the regular daily burnt offering, offered to cover sin. This horn continued to throw truth to the ground, acting decisively and succeeding. Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who had spoken first, ‘For how long is the vision concerning the cessation of the regular burnt offering, the crime that produces desolation, and the giving over of the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?‘ And he said, to me, ‘For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be restored to its rightful place.’”   Daniel 8:9-14

The angel will interpret this vision for Daniel, and we will get more information about this king who took such drastic action against God’s Holy Place, against the sacrifices offered in his name, and the idol set up in the Holy of Holies. Today we need to think deeply about how this tyrant, like all tyrants, told and believed a big lie. Instead of cherishing truth, he brazenly lied, but it’s not smart to lie to the God who is truth.

LORD, help my mouth not to tell lies even when I think it will achieve good ends. Help me to resist the pervasive lie that we can create reality simply by our words, falsely usurping the creative power that only you possess.
