The Killer Loneliness - September 23

  • 2021 Sep 23

The Killer Loneliness

(The Counselor) will never leave you (John 14:16).

Dear friends:

A man misdialed a telephone number.  He was embarrassed by his mistake and quickly apologized.  But the woman who answered said, "Oh, that's okay.  Please, don't hang up!  I am 83 years old and have no one to keep me company.

Won't you please talk to me?"

It is a strange paradox.  Our world's population is exploding and most people now live in crowded urban population centers, yet millions of people are feeling isolated and lonely -- almost as if they were the only persons left on the earth.  Unlike the old days, neighbors do not know and rarely even see their next-door neighbors.

Loneliness is said to be the world's number one killer.  Think for a moment of the unlikely people who have died of this dreaded agony, such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Howard Hughes.  They all enjoyed the frenzy of public approval.  They could hardly find a place to escape their fans and followers.  Yet the end came much too early for each of these famous and popular celebrities.

Do you know who are the most lonely people in our society?  According to some surveys, college students are rated number one, and divorced people, number two.

We must trace the problem back to where it began -- to Adam and Eve -- if we are to find a lasting solution to this chronic emptiness.  God did not intend for us to be lonely. He created us to enjoy meaningful relationships with each other and with Him.

In the beginning, Adam and Eve had each other, so they were not socially lonely.  They communed daily with God, their Creator, so they were not spiritually lonely.

Then they disobeyed God and sinned by eating the forbidden fruit.  Socially, Adam and Eve still had each other.  But spiritually, they lost the comforting presence of the Lord, and mankind has felt this spiritual emptiness ever since.

Most of the people of the world are spiritually lonely because they do not have constant fellowship with their

Father through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.  This also causes social loneliness, being cut off not only from God but from God's people.

No matter what their social situation, people who know their God through Jesus Christ need not ever be lonely.  God says, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5, NIV).  About the Holy Spirit, Jesus said, "(He) will never leave you" (John 14:16, NLT).

Thank God for His constant companionship - about which we can be assured!

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
