Kennedy remarked in his Inaugural: "The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God." Lyndon B. Johnson said in his Inaugural, 1965: "The judgment of God is harshest on those who are most favored." Richard Nixon, 1969, remarked in his Inaugural: "As all are born equal in dignity before God, all are born equal in dignity before man." Jimmy Carter, in his 1977 Inaugural, said: "'What does the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.'" In 1981, Ronald Reagan stated in his Inaugural: "With God's help, we can and will resolve the problems which now confront us. And after all, why shouldn't we believe that? We are Americans."
