Spending This Christmas or Spending It Well: Resisting Consumerism

The Christmas season is once again upon us and with it overwhelming encouragement from Madison Avenue to spend what we have not earned to buy what we cannot afford. The thrust of this consumerist message is that the holiday is best enjoyed or most fully realized through the acquisition of “things.”

A Very "Selfie" World

By now you may have heard that Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year is “selfie.” It’s good word for our day, as without a doubt, it has become a very “selfie” world.

You Have to Know Why You Pray

We’ve all heard the story of the young wife who cut off both ends of the ham before cooking it. When her husband asked her why – she didn’t know; that’s the way her mom always did it.

Of course, I don’t want the church as the church to set up a program of feeding the hungry or clothing the naked. What?

What about Churched Harry and Mary (and Discipleship)?

Let’s draw a picture of Churched Harry and Mary. They go to church and love the worship; they often have jubilant or overwhelmingly emotional experiences there;

Would You “Give Up Everything” for the Kingdom?

This is the question, of sorts, I recently posed to a local businessman. As I indicated in my last commentary, I have embarked on an enterprise that I believe offers a modern example of what Jesus meant when he told his disciples to “seek first the kingdom” (Matt. 6:33).
